Question

Does my renters insurance cover my roommate?

Short answer

No, not unless they're named on your policy. Renters insurance covers you and relatives who live with you, so a roommate needs their own policy or to be added by name.

Who a renters policy covers

A standard renters policy covers the named policyholder, a spouse, and relatives or children under 21 who live in the household. A roommate who isn't related to you isn't covered, for their belongings or for damage they cause.

Your options

  • Separate policies: the simplest choice. Each person picks their own limits and claims don't affect the other.
  • One shared policy: some insurers let you add a roommate by name. It can be cheaper, but a claim by either of you goes on the shared record, and splitting a payout can get awkward.

Liability still matters

If your roommate leaves the bath running and floods the apartment below, your policy won't cover their liability. Their own renters policy would.

This is general information about how US policies usually work. Your own policy's wording and your state's rules decide the details.
